San juan chamula

San Juan Chamula

The wool of San Juan Chamula is the element that perhaps most reinforces this town’s ethnic identity.

Its inhabitants – of tsotsil, tseltal, mame, tojolabal and chol descent – set themselves apart by incorporating threads of wool into their attire.

The women are in charge of shepherding small pastures of darkly hued sheep – raised in Chiapas and in danger of extinction – as means of subsistence, making use of the wool in their textiles and the manure for their crops.
